Fightining Irish look to continue multi-sport success

Monday August 9, 2010

Augusta, Ga--For a school the size of Aquinas, that features just under 300 kids, the sports programs have really stepped up. A great basketball season, outstanding soccer team, then a state finalist in baseball. Now the Irish are expecting that to carry over to the fall and football.

And with the pieces they have, no reason to think it won't. Dane Anderson and Brendon Douglas lead an offense that is more then capable to score from anywhere on the field. Attitude can go a long way in high school sports, and now, Aquinas has developed a winning attitude.

"I mean we're getting a lot of respect around the state" said senior Sam Few "With that run in baseball, we're ready to win and we know exactly how to win."

"Everybody's attitude in the whole school has changed I believe" added Dennis Douglas "Everyone is becoming a family and we're learning how to win. We use to not know how to win and we didn't know what it was like and now we do."

While most spots are pretty solid, Aquinas is like a lot of teams, lacking in depth. An injury here or there can set the team back some.

"We've got 46 guys out here playing and so it's really good numbers for the size of our school." said coach Matt LeZotte "The depth at both our offensive and defensive line is going to be a main issue for us."

Once again Aquinas will play the role of underdog but if the past sports year is any indication of this year, the underdog may be a force as the season rolls on.
