Tradition rich Blackville Hilda looking to rebound

Thursday August 5, 2010

From 2001 to 2008 Blackville Hilda averaged 12 wins a season. That included a perfect year and a state title. In 2009, the Fighting Hawks, didn't have much fight and managed just six wins. Talk about playing with a chip on their shoulder.

With that in mind, Blackville is getting back to the basics as coach David Berry puts it. They need to block better and tackle better to start with. They have a decent amount of experience class wise, but not playing wise so they'll have their work cut out once again. They're hoping the off season work outs will pay dividends once they turn the lights on Friday nights.

"Over the summer, everyone was working hard and coming together as a team." said senior Chris Kearse "We just have to go out and play hard. It's my responsibility as quarterback to lead the team but we also have to have other players step up to help lead us."

"Things like that happen from time to time" said coach David Berry "You kind of run in cycles, especially when you get in the smaller schools a lot of times when different people come through. we really have to get back to the basic stuff and be simple and do the things we do best."

Right now it looks like the defense will be pretty strong, but never count a David Berry team out. With a track record like he has in Blackville, don't be surprised if they flirt with double digit wins once again.
