For years, the Augusta Christian football team came up just a little short of that elusive state title, at least until 2012.

Now, it's a new challenge. The have to learn how to defend a state championship.

None of these Lions have ever had a chance to defend a title, but they'll need to do it with change all around. First and foremost, four-year starting quarterback Tyler Roberson took his talents to the college ranks, along with some of his line and defensive teammates.

If you're going to repeat, you always have to think to the future though, and with AC now circled on everyone's schedule, it's time to move forward.

"Our kids understand that there is a bullseye on our chest," said Head Coach Keith Walton. "We've always been the hunters. Now we're being hunted, but like I say all the time, no one ever really hunts lions because they hunt you back."

Junior lineman Zach Giella added, "We were at a track meet last spring, and there was a school that had a countdown to their first game with us, so it was a little different seeing that."

Two keys to the offense this year will be Thomas Banks and Nick Fortenberry.

Banks has been the team's leading rusher the last two years, going for nearly 1500 yards a year ago, and Fortenberry added just under a thousand yards receiving.
