For the kids east of the Savannah River the wait is over.

Two days after Georgia high schools hit the football field, South Carolina did the same. They got out early Friday morning, starting the year with new players but the same goal of bringing home that state championship.

For schools like Williston-Elko, that dream has become a reality in the last few years.

Others, like Silver Bluff, have seen it in the not-so-distant past.

Then there are ones like Barnwell, who are trying to recapture old glory.

No matter the status, the first day is about hope, and they were all ready to hit the field.

Williston-Elko's Jahmaya Jenkins, "Words can't explain, when I woke up it was like I was in a daze. This is the first practice for me being a senior. The last practice will be just right around the corner for me. It just feels really good."

"We're really excited, just trying to go out here and look forward to a good season," added Silver Bluff's Gyasi Yeldell. "We just try to come out here and do the best we can and get better everyday."

Barnwell's Devonta Ashley said, "For me being a senior, I'm trying to go out here and win state and bring home a ring. So, this is very big for us."

Some of the Palmetto state teams don't have much time to prepare. A handful of Week Zero games are scheduled for August 17th.
