Aug. 17, 2014 SYLVANIA, GA-- Screven County was a region champion two years ago. The rise to the top is making a big difference to this year's Gamecocks squad. Going into the season, the players and coaches believe they're not too far away from a return to a title.

There are a lot of similarities between the 2012 and 2014 teams. It all started with a team that worked together during the offseason. After using 11 different offensive lineman last year, the offense returns with leaders and experience. The ingredients of a team prepared for a region championship run.

"I think they realized it was either time to do something or not. We don't have a big senior class this year, but I think I see a lot of similarities in that they've all kind of bought in," coach Ron Duncan said.

"The team is closer than it was last year. We lifted together all summer and I really see us winning something this year," running back Tavarius Johnson

Screven County lost in the first round of the playoffs last season. Johnson filled in nicely at running back with several 100 yard games in 2013. Johnson and Malik Prescott will get a bulk of the carries in 2014.
