August 25, 2013 Screven County head coach Ron Duncan couldn't have asked for a better debut season in 2012. It was a special run for the Gamecocks reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
Not only did Screven break through the GHSA bracket, they advanced to the second round. It couldn't have been done without 26 seniors on the roster and a mighty big running back named Jeremy Johnson.
Johnson's high school accomplishments goes longer than some of his carries for the Gamecocks. Last season, Johnson led AA in rushing yards and led the state in scoring. Unfortunately, all those players have moved on leaving behind a young, but hungry team in Sylvania.
"Being that it was our first time tasting that, we're hungry, we always want more of it. It's definitely a drive," lineman Adam Austin said.
"They've bought in to what we're preaching. They're eager. I wouldn't say they're the most mature bunch because they're young, but there's a lot of physical tools there," coach Duncan said.
The Gamecocks open the season Friday against Groves.
