Augusta, Ga--Two weeks into the season Aquinas already has their signature win. Beating the fourth ranked team in the state has put everyone else on notice, this team may be as good as the past couple of years. One reason for the success, the play of Ruben Garnett.
His performance against George Walton is why we've selected him as our acadmey sports player of the week. He's listed at 5-8 and 175 but plays very large under the lights. He was the workhorse carrying the ball 29 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns, the second, coming in overtime for the win. When they got late in the ballgame Garnett knew it was time to shine.
"In my head I was like, we're not losing and I'm going to make a play" said Ruben Garnett " I made a play and that's all I wanted to do and I did it. I put my team goals ahead of my individual goals and I just want to bring the team it's first region title and hopefully it's first state championship"
"We knew we were in better shape then they were and we have a very good offensive line and we have two very good running backs in front of him in that formation so that was our go to formation and Ruben had been running well, the line had been blocking well, John Morris had been blocking well so that's what we decided to go with"
He knows he's going to take a beating this year, thus he hit the weight room as hard as ever in the summer. He added some weight and toughness to get him ready for the season.
