Waynesboro, GA - They may have snuck up on some people last year, but Burke County isn't flying under the radar in 2011. After a region championship and state semi-final appearance, the Bears are public enemy number one on most teams' schedules.
With the offense almost completely intact, Burke will give opponents plenty of reasons to worry. This is a smart bunch too. They know they're going to get everyone's best game, and they plan to be ready for each one.
Head Coach Eric Parker says, "Everyone who has us on their schedule has that game highlighted. So, if we were able to fly under the radar and surprise some people last year, I promise you it won't happen this year."
"We gotta defend our turf. We won it last year, so of course we want to win it again this year," adds sophomore quarterback Donquell Green. "We just want to keep winning it. So, the teams that are coming to us, we gotta protect what we own."
One important piece is the quarterbacks. Corey Mayton and Green will share the role for the second straight year. With Mayton giving a pocket presence and Green being a mobile threat, they'll give teams plenty to think about.
Mayton says, "It was a very big help for us both to get a little more mature playing the quarterback position, running the ball and throwing the ball. This year we expect to do better things than last year, not just going to the semi-finals but going ahead and going to the dome."
The Bears will be tested right out of the gate. They face Baldwin, the same Braves team Burke beat by one point in last year's playoffs.
