Lincoln County football

Lincolnton, Ga--When you look up the word winning in the dictionary there may as well be a picture of Lincoln County head coach Larry Campbell. Now in his 41st year as the Red Devils head coach, Campbell has had one losing record, his first, way back in 1972.
Don't expect another anytime soon even with question marks this year, namely at quarterback. Franklin Sherman is gone, and Campbell has two youngsters who have never taken a varsity snap. That's a big time concern to a coach who's seen just about everything there is to see on the football field.
"Our biggest problem without a shadow of a doubt is settling on a quarterback," Campbell says. "We have two fine men at quarterback but neither one of them, and this is fair, is going to have the ability of the two we had last year, and they're not as strong as they are and so we have to adapt our offense to them."
What the Red Devils do have is a couple of prime time running backs in Craig and Sherrod Jones. No question they'll be asked to do a lot in helping take some of the stress off the inexperienced quarterbacks. But hey, this is Lincoln County. The kids put in the work and know it'll pay off in victories on Friday nights.
"I think this off season we worked hard, we worked real hard to get better," says Denzel Gunby. "I think we're going to be able to do it and I think we became better since spring practice and I think we got a little bit better."
"We're great, we've been working all summer hard, we've been doing everything possible to get ready. I believe we're not a rebuilding team, but we just reload," says lineman Brandon Biles.
They do just reload. Another concern, though, is on the defensive side of the ball. Up front, not a lot of experience, and for a team that's traditionally one of the best on defense, we'll see how quickly they'll gel.
