High expectations, not hopes, at Washington County

Sandersville, GA - 2010 was a good season, not a great one, by Washington County standards. The Golden Hawks had seven wins, but lost the region crown and bowed out in the first round of the playoffs. This year, that just won't be enough.

Joel Ingram's team has high expectations, like state championship high, but they have work to do first.

They're starting from scratch on the offensive line, and Savon Washington has to dominate the tailback role he shared last year.

There's no time for excuses in this program, though, and they think they're on the right track.

Ingram says, "You look at a team and say it has potential, but that's a word I don't like to use because potential gets your butt kicked, but I like the overall chemistry we've got so far. I think we've got a positive energy about our team right now. We've just got to keep that rolling."

Junior lineman Michael Selby adds, "This is one of the best years I've had here. We had a great summer. Everybody's positive. It's going to be a good year. We're going to play harder, and we're going to be more of a team, and we're going to play with a chip on our shoulder from that last season."

In Ingram's system, part of being prepared is playing a tough schedule, and the Golden Hawks have one from start to finish.

"If you want to be the man, you've got to beat the man, and we're going to play as tough of competition as we can play to get us ready," Ingram says. "I think they'll get you ready to jump into that muddy water with the Thomson's, the Burke's, the Butler's, the ARC's and everything that comes with that."

They jump in that muddy water from the start. Their annual grudge match against Jefferson County is week one.
