Waynesboro, Ga--One win, that's all that stood between Edmund Burke and its first ever football state title. They may have another shot at it this fall.
With plenty of experience at the skill positions, the Spartans are ready to roll. Ask Coach Buddy Sorrow, and he'll be the first to tell you last year means nothing. That's over and done with. But a lot of these guys won a state crown on the baseball diamond and are now playing football. There's definitely a distinct carryover in attitude.
"During the middle of the baseball season they were getting a little frustrated because we had lost a couple of region games to Robert Toombs," says Sorrow. "We had played some bad games in the middle, and I kept telling them like I do in football, to win the war. You don't have to win all the battles, but just the right ones. That turned it around."
"We had been to the final four probably, I think it's four or five times in both sports combined. Then we finally got it done. It's like we're going to get it done in football."
Keep an eye on guys like Michael Taylor and Dawson Atkinson, two of the leaders on the team. Right now the biggest concern seems to be depth up front. If they can avoid injuries, a state title may be there for the taking.
