Augusta, Ga--When the season started a lot of folks thought Aquinas would struggle some this year. If only every team could "struggle" like this. A perfect 11 and 0 record and this team is enjoying the ride
A lot of it goes to coach James Leonard who's kept an experienced team loose as possible. These guys truly like each other and have fun on the field and off. Some senior leadership helps in that department as they get ready for the state quarterfinals tomorrow night.
"Everyone is a little more chill you know, we know what we're doing" said Jeff Fox "We're much more experienced. Coach Leonard is much more chill so its easier to get along you know."
"This is a very relaxed group" said James Leonard "This team, compared to teams in the past at Aquinas, they don't put a whole lot of pressure on themselves. They are very loose, they like to joke around in the lockerroom before they come down, but right before kick off they tend to focus up a little bit but we like the guys to play loose here"
The challenge tomorrow night, Mt paran, who features a pair of outstanding running backs. Then again, the Irish have Ruben Garnett, 1700 yards on the ground and 20 touchdowns. But sophomore quarterback Liam Welch has also grown up and proven to be a threat throwing the ball as well.
"Savannah Christian, they took the run away from us so we went to the air so we have the option to do either. The way they play defense we feel like we can do both, be a little more balanced we hope" added coach Leonard
The irish are the three seed as they get to host Mt Paran tomorrow night. Aquinas has even brought in extra bleachers as they expect a big crowd for the state quarterfinals.
