Williston, SC--Most teams around have dreams of winning the state title. For two area squads, they go in as defending champs. Today we go camping with arguably the top team around, Williston Elko.
The Blue Devils simply dominated last year on the way to hoisting the trophy in Orangeburg the day after Thanksgiving. This year, right back to the hard work that got 'em there. With all but one guy back on offense including the explosive powers of Kendric Salley and Dexter Staley, points shouldn't be hard to come by for Williston.
"I think our offense is our biggest strength" said quarterback Tamyn Garrick "Having 10 out of 11 guys coming back so I feel like we have our whole offense coming back and I feel like we can be very explosive and that's our strength right now probably."
"You have some of the best skill players in the state right now so offense is just ratcheting right now" said Rokeem Williams
While there are a few holes on defense to fill, no question this team goes in as heavy favorites to repeat. But they know there's a big target on the back but feel the pressure to win may actually be a little less this time around.
I think this year is a little more relaxed this year then last year to be honest with you" said coach Dwayne Garrick "There's always high expectations after you win a championship and as long as the community and everybody is realistic about our chances and expectations then that's something we can live with."
"Feels great being state champs" said Demetrius Facison "Coming back with a lot of teams out there trying to get in their rhythm but I think we're going to handle it."
One of their hardest games of the year, may be there first when they take on Strom Thurmond to start things off.
