SANDERSVILLE, GA---In Sandersville football teams are used to winning. Washington County is a perrenial power in class 3-A and nearby Brentwood is dominant force in the private school ranks. The War Eagles though did something rare last season, finishing the year without a winning record.
After two state titles in five years, a 5-5-1 record is disappointing but the eagles aren't worried. The 2006 squad was filled with inexperience and only lost two or three starters on each side of the ball to graduation. Now, last year's young players are seasoned veterans, expecially on the defensive front where coach Bert Brown thinks the Eagles will excel. A .500 record isn't the end of the world but at Brentwood they plan to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Brown says, "We've had a pretty good run over the last five years. Two state championships and four or five region titles, so our expectations are pretty high. Our kids know the bar is pretty high here at Brentwood and they want to make sure that last year was just a bump in the road."
Adds Senior Dalton Harris, "We just got to work hard. Coach Brown knows what he's doing and we just have to work together."
The War Eagles get there first shot August 31st when they host John Hancock.
