WAGENER, S.C.---The football team at Wagener-Salley won just 2 games last season but the reason was fairly obvious. Nearly 2-thirds of the team were Freshman, including, in a way, first year year head coach Ross Smith.
Now everyone's got a year of seasoning under their belt in the Wagener-Salley system, including coach Smith. The Eagles also return many of their skill palyers, including last year's quarterback, Dontrel Salley, who will be installed at running back this season. A move designed to take better advantage of Salley's range of skills.
Salley says, "I am very excited about that because I want to get the ball and show them what I can really do."
As a Sophomore, Salley is among the large group of underclassmen that make up the Eagles roster. These aren't just any underclassmen though, after a 2006 season when so many Freshman saw playing time, the youngsters have more experience than most though it's still a challenge for the coaching staff.
Coach Smith says, "Just the youth when you're going up against some fo the opponents we go up against, some guys that are two and three years older. In a way (the youth) is good for the future but at the present it can be kind of tough."
Not surprising when you have just 3 Seniors total on the roster. The season begins for the War Eagles this Friday when they host Gilbert in game one.
