WAYNESBORO, Ga.---The mission for new head coach Eric Parker is simple; make the playoffs. The Bears haven't seen the postseason since 2002 despite two 7 win seasons. Over that same span, Parker made Laney High a fixture in the playoffs. Now he's at a bigger school with even bigger expectations.
On paper the Bears aren't far from being a contender. They went 6 and 4 last season and lost 3 of those games by less than 10 points. They also return Georgia committment, Cornelius Washington, a inebacker and tight end who won the region title in the hundred meters last year. The Bears though, know this can't be a one man show if they want to win and so far, say teammwork is a strength.
Washington says, "I think, just our trust for each other. I mean, we really enjoy playing with each other and being around each other. We're all friends so I thikn that's going to be our strong point."
Adds coach Parker, "I just think tht the kids here are accepting the hard work and preparation. I think we're gonna have to do it by committee. I think the guys are dedicated to doing that and I think that will be the strength of this football team."
The Bears, who haven't won a playoff game since 2000, start work with one of the tougher schedules in the state on August 31st when they head to Jefferson County for the opener.
