BLACKVILLE, SC---2 years ago, Blackville-Hilda was on top of the world as class A state champs in South Carolina. After a title, even an 11 win season like last year is a bit disappointing.
Which brings us to 2007. Head coach David Berry enters his 21st year at the helm after losing 13 seniors to graduation. A challenge to be sure for a team that has no quarterback at the moment and just one returning starter in the backfield.
Berry is confident the offense will come together and says, as with most Blackville-Hilda teams, the strength of this unit will be the defense.
As far as the players are concerned, the lack of stars on the '07 squad may be a good thing.
Senior center Dexter Butler explains, "Years in the past, teams have been based on one player rather than come together as a team and I think we have the ability to do that this year."
Coach Berry adds, "That's why we do the same things over and over and over. Being young, it helps them get better and better and better and we just hope some of them can step in and fill those spots that we lost."
The Hawks open the season August 24th, on the road at North.
