MARTINEZ---There are a handful of new head coaches in the high school ranks this season and tonight we'll head to Lakeside, where a North Carolina transplant is hoping to give the Panthers back their bite.
Jody grooms comes to Lakeside from the tar heel state and inherits a program in need of some help. The panthers haven't had a winning season since 2000 and haven't won more than 3 games in the past 4 years. Lakeside was just 2 and 8 last season and suffered 6 shutouts. It's an uphill battle for the Panthers but with a good turnout so far, coach Grooms has liked what he's seen.
The biggest challenge isn't finding talent, he says he's got some football players. The challenge is convincing those players they can win.
Coach Grooms explains, "The biggest thing is kids have to have some success and you have to simulate things in practice where they do good things. Then, every now and then, you throw in a couple drills where you know they're not gonna be successful and see how they respond to that adversity."
The Panthers open against another team with a new head coach,
The Fighting Irish of Aquinas, at Lakeside, August 31st.
