Williston, SC--Last year maybe was a little on the unexpected side for Williston Elko and making it to the state finals. After all, the road has always gone through Blackville Hilda. Now a days, no question to get to Orangeburg and the state finals in class A, that road goes through the communities of Williston and Elko.
Blue Devils have been a run away freight train this year literally demolishing everyone in their path. A perfect 13 and 0 record and averaging a mind boggling 51 points a game while giving up just 9. No taking anything for granted for these guys who won't just settle on being there. It's a different work man's like attitude that's gotten 'em this far.
"You know a lot of the playing around during practice has been cut out." said senior Shamel Harley "We use to have a lot of playing around last year and coach got on us about that. And jumping off sides during the game and having penalties cost us last year in the state championship (game) and all of that has been cut out."
"We have a great group of kids and play extremely hard and do what we ask them to do. Being 13 and 0 is a surprise but not a surprise but this last one would really make it special." said coach Dwayne Garrick
Standing in their way of a perfect season is the team to beat 'em in the finals a year ago, Scott's Branch. Of course knowing their team helps prepare this time around. That game is a noon kickoff from the campus of South Carolina State. Oh by the way, closest margin of victory this year for the Blue Devils, 20 points and that came in the second round of the playoffs.
