With just four days away until the start of the high school football season, no doubt, every team is excited to start what they hope will be a solid year. That includes Wagener-Salley, hoping to turn around a program that has had it rough the past few years.

It's been 4 years since the war eagles have made the playoffs. Since then, they've won just 6 games in 3 years. Last year, the team had just one victory but came close to winning two others. But thanks to a good offseason and practice thus far, head coach Ryan Russell is happy with the state of his team right now.

"Every single day we're getting better," said Russell. "We're miles away from where we were a year ago. We've got some good leadership that's developing and that makes you excited when you see some hard work and some leadership developing."

The War Eagles did graduate 8 seniors, including quarterback and kicker Jon Holsenbach but do return a good mix of skill players and linemen. They begin the season this friday at McCormick and will start region play in week 4 against the always tough Blackville-Hilda.
