Harlem, GA--You'd be hard pressed to find a coach who makes excuses when it comes to football. Harlem's Jimmy Lewis has every reason to make one, but he won't. Lewis will just make do with what he has, and to be honest, that's not a lot, especially warm bodies!
No program in the area was hurt more by the opening of Grovetown then Harlem. The Bulldogs went from a roster of near 70 to just 34 kids, and just four seniors at that. Sure it'll be tough, sure it won't come easy, sure they could take some lumps, but this team has something a lot of teams don't have, heart.
"We'll we're going to have to get in great shape because everybody's going to have to play not both ways, but three ways" said long time Harlem coach Jimmy Lewis "They're going to have to play offense, defense and special teams. So we have to get in great shape. As far as heart wise, they're hearts are big so we have to rely on big heart and great shape."
"We're just going to have to work hard and get in shape. We have the talent so we just have to get in shape and learn to play all four quarters." said quarterback Zach Morris
Even the Bulldogs say they have no intention to just throw in the towel and have already put in a ton of effort. Quarterback Zach Morris returns to run the triple option while Tyler James, Forrest Christian and A.J. Beacher are the other seniors for the Bulldogs. While the numbers aren't there to work with, the intangibles are.
"We've got that attitude, like I said, great heart and great attitude and you know as long as you have that, coach's can make something out of that." added Lewis
Of course it won't be easy for Harlem in a class 4-A schedule. Don't be surprised if they surprise a team or two before the year is out.
