Martinez, Ga--It's not that often a coach is handed the reins of a successful football program but at Augusta Christian, Keith Walton takes over one of the top independent schools around and look for a few new wrinkles to the lions offense.
When you have to replace a guy like William Banks, who did just about everything for you, a change of pace is in order. That's the case as expect some air wars in pride valley. That's right, with a solid corp of wide receivers back, coach Walton is looking to get them the ball and that willl be through the air.
"We've mostly been a run team but this year we're putting in a lot of the air raid and Texas Tech type offense so it's really exciting for us to do new things and just looking forward to what he's (Coach Walton) been bringing to the season." said quarterback Evan Wells
"It's big, we have a lot of receivers back I guess" said Cole Turner "A lot of skill positions back and I guess I'm looking forward to the new passing game."
Bruce lane didn't leave the cupboard bare when he left the Lions program. Besides the receivers coming back, a good portion of the line and defense also returns. One thing coach Walton is trying to develop an atmosphere that willl put an opponent on edge.
"Want to create an atmosphere. We're not looking for someone else, not necessarily our crowd to do it, we want our crowd to feed off of us. We want to create the atmosphere about encouraging our teammates." said coach Keith Walton
"So when we have home games we want it to get pretty crazy and for us to have a real exciting atmosphere for us to play in and have the fans enjoy while we're on the field." added Wells
The ultimate goal for the Lions, getting back to Orangeburg and the SCISA state finals. Plenty of work needs to be done and new faces need to step forward for that to happen.
