Lincolnton, Ga--Not many football teams in the state of Georgia can boast more than 10 state championships. One of them that can though, the Lincoln County Red Devils
The team is full of great tradition from running back Garrison Hearst to its head coach Larry Campbell. Campbell is entering his 38th season on the sidelines and is the third winningest active coach in the nation. But all of that means nothing to him. Even after all those years of coaching, he isn't even sure how well this year's team is going to turn out
It's just literally impossible. We've got so many spots we've got to see. If the quarterback position comes through, if the 2 outside linebacker spots come through, if the 2 kids we replace in the secondary come through, we'll be okay. It's just hard to measure before Friday night" said head coach Larry Campbell
Something the team can count on is running the ball with AG Middlebrooks. He rushed for more than 1300 yards as a sophomore last season and will be counted on this year for even more. Add in plenty of other weapons on offense and defense and there's now wonder this team is eyeing its third state title in just four years
"Well, we just have high expectations for this year. I mean, last year was just a huge disappointment to us so we expect to do much better this year and get it done" said senior Wilkes Goolsby
You must be a powerhouse when an 11-win season is a disappointment. The push for the state title starts for real next Friday against Greene County. Before then, they're going to Thomson and their legendary coach Luther Welsh. Now that game was suppose to be Friday, they've changed it and they'll play tomorrow night in Lincolnton starting at 7:30.
