(Louisville, Ga))--Imagine being a high school football player and playing for a state title all of your varsity years. Welcome to Thomas Jefferson. If they can make it back to the title game, that'd be four straight trips, having won two already.
To be perfectly honest with you, it'd be an upset not to make it back. All but a handfull of kids return including mr. Running back Derrick Mathis. Early this year mathis will go over the 6000 yard mark for his career. He's not doing it alone. Taylor Barrentine and Logan Perdue could easily eclipse the thousand yard mark. Did we mention the guys up front are pretty darn good???
"It'd be incredible to win a state championship, last game, it'd be awesome to go out with that kind of a bang" said running back Derrick Mathis
"We have too much talent not to show it off" said senior Ben Phillips "We're blessed with great athletes and people who want to work hard and do good and that's going to help us a lot."
Hard to find any weak points with this team, but when you play independent ball, usually your roster isn't that big and depth can be an issue. That's nit picking here with a team that's driven by one thing, winning a title.
"These seniors, I give them a lot of credit" said coach Chuck Wimberly. "They've towed us a long way from the time they were a freshmen to now. I can only imagine as a player of what it would feel like to play for four state championships and have that opportunity and these kids, I really do think they really have that opportunity."
And to make the road to a title a little easier. Flint River, who won the crown last season, moves a class, so they won't be standing in Thomas Jefferson's way.
