Blackville, SC--There's only one team in our area that won their last game, that being Blackville Hilda. That also means there's a bigger bullseye on the Hawks as defending state champs.
It was late november when they hoisted the trophy high overhead in Orangeburg, boy that seems like forever ago to long time coach Dave Berry and crew. You see getting back there will be harder then ever having lost 21 kids. Plenty of new faces makes these first few weeks even more important
"We lost most people up front" said long time coach David Berry "So we're really having to hunt and peck to kind of find places to fill in up front and get some depth there. It's hard to say what our strength is going to be right now because we haven't found any."
Don't let him kid you. This year's strength will be in the offensive backfield. A trio of running backs return including 1000 yard gainer Joe Thomas. While offense gets the headlines, defense wins titles. It's a fact not lost on these guys.
"That's the way coach Berry has showed us. He said if they don't score then how can we lose? But if we don't score, how can we win? You just have to stay focused on it." said senior Quinten Johnson
"That's the name of the game, if you don't give up points, you don't get beat and that's one thing we tell them, if they can run, they can play. If they don't run on this side of the ball then they have a hard time getting onto the field." added Coach Berry.
One thing Blackville Hilda has on their side, traditiion. These kids don't accept losing. It should be no different this year eitehr.
