ORANGEBURG, SC---It was an uncharacteristic, three loss regular season for Blackville-Hilda but when the playoffs came around, the Hawks turned it back on with four straight wins including today's class A, division II state title game against Great Falls, 14 to 7. The Hawks used their opunishing running game to beat up on the Red Devils in front of a good crowd at SC State's Oliver C. Dawson stadium.

Great Falls got on the board first with a long touchdown pass from Gaither Baumgardner to Terrell Hutchinson on their first possesion. The Hawks would answer in the second quarter when senior Darrell White took the snap and run up the middle for a 75 yard touchdown. After the extra point was blocked, it was a 7 to 6 ballgame. Neither team could move the ball much until the first play of the fourth quarter. That was when Blackville broke another big run up the middle with senior Desmond Brown getting free for a 45 yard touchdown. After the two point conversion the Hawks had a 14 to 7 lead.

Blackville-Hilda's defense then came up big the rest of the quarter with Erick Bradley intercepting Great Falls last ditch effort to seal the win. Something that may have seemed out of reach after Great Falls took an early lead and it took some motivation from the head coach to get the Hawks back in it.

"We just tried to make them understand they had to keep their head in the ball game," says coach David Berry. " We made a little adjustment heere and there, you know, on defense and we said just don't play out of control; helter skelter. You've got to play under control, keep your composure and we're fortunate enough to come out on top."

Senior Darrell White also helped calm his teammates down. "Coach said keep your head up and we can come back and win this one," says White. "He said keep your head up. I told our players 'We win as a team and die as individuals.' We sat in their(the locker room), we prayed and got our head together and came out and played hawk football."
