LOUISVILLE, Ga---It isn't often that players in class A of the Georgia Independant School Association get Division I interest but Thomas Jefferson has a running back whose numbers are impossible to ignore.
Just a junior, Derrick Mathis is putting up numbers this season that most players would be satusfied with for an entire high school career. Take this Friday night for example. Mathis gutted the Briarwood Buccaneers to the tune of 242 yards and 4 touchdowns. The real jaw-dropper: that was on only 6 carries, an average of just over 40 yards a carry. Far from a fluke, Mathis has run for 694 yards and 11 touchdowns in just 4 games so far this season. His coach says he's an outstanding young man to boot as evidenced by his reluctance to take any of the credit.
Mathis says, "It's hard not to put up numbers like our backs are averaging per carry. It's hard not to when they open holes big enough to drive a truck through."
The Jaguars are on pace to have Mathis rush for 2,000 yards and have two other backs break the thousand yard barrier this season. But for now, Mathis is our Operation Football Live Player of the Week.
