PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) -- Rory McIlroy tells Sports Illustrated that walking off the course before finishing the second round at the Honda Classic was a mistake.
McIlroy quit after eight holes on Friday when he was 7-over par and on his way to missing the cut. He told reporters his head was not in the right place, but later issued a statement saying his wisdom tooth was causing pain.
The world No. 1 spoke to Sports Illustrated on Sunday night. He says he should have finished the 18th hole, played the front nine and tried his hardest, even if he shot 85. McIlroy says his "reactive decision" was not good for the tournament, kids or fans watching him.
He says, "It was not the right thing to do."
