Lions' Johnson breaks receiving record

Saturday, December 22, 2012

DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson broke an NFL record.

He also put himself closer to another league mark.

Johnson had 117 yards receiving in the first half Saturday night against the Atlanta Falcons. That gave him 100 yards receiving for an eighth straight game, breaking an NFL record set by Charley Hennigan in 1961 and matched by Michael Irvin in 1995. It was Johnson's 11th game with 100 yards receiving this season, tying Irvin's NFL mark.

Johnson needed 65 yards in the second half to break Jerry Rice's single-season record of 1,848 yards set in 1995 with San Francisco. In the first quarter, Johnson surpassed Herman Moore's single-season franchise record of 1,686 yards.

Befitting a season that has gone badly, Johnson fumbled in the first half to help Atlanta add to its big lead.
