PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Phillies second baseman Chase Utley had arthroscopic hip surgery yesterday and is expected to need four to six months to recover.

Despite feeling symptoms of the injury for much of the year, the three-time All Star hit .292 and led all second basemen with 33 home runs and 104 RBIs to help Philadelphia win the National League East for the second consecutive year. He added three home runs and nine RBIs in the playoffs as the Phillies went on to capture the second World Series in team history and first since 1980.
Spring training begins Feb. 14. Philadelphia's first regular-season game is April 5.
