Monday, September 15, 2008. (AP) -- New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has moved into sole possession of second place on baseball's all-time saves list.
Rivera threw just seven pitches in recording the last three outs of the Yankees' 4-2 triumph over the Chicago White Sox tonight. It was his 479th career save, all with the Bombers.
Lee Smith recorded 478 saves during his 18 major-league seasons.
San Diego's Trevor Hoffman is the all-time saves leader with 552.
