SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Justin Hicks and Kevin Streelman are sharing
the lead after one round of the 108th U.S. Open. Hicks and Streelman opened with 3-under-par 68's on the South course at Torrey Pines, putting them one stroke ahead of four players. Hicks began his round with birdies on six of his first nine holes before surviving a 3-over on the back nine. He and Streelman aren't even ranked among the top 600 golfers in the world.
Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby, Rocco Mediate and Eric Axley share
second at minus-2. Axley is ranked 503rd. Much of the gallery trailed Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott, the world's top three players who are paired together for the first two rounds.
Woods double-bogeyed his first hole since returning from
arthroscopic knee surgery. He finished with a 1-over 72 but said he
felt he was in great position despite two double-bogeys and a
three-putt. Mickelson birdied his final hole for an even-par 71, while Scott opened with a 2-over 73.
