March 2, 2014 ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 3 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team dropped an 11-4 contest at Flagler in the final game of the three-game series.
The Pacers are now 11-4 on the season.
Down 1-0 heading into the third stanza, Ty Barkell homered to right field, plating Costen who had walked. The base hit gave head coach Kenny Thomas’ team a 2-1 advantage.
However, the Saints would even the contest in the bottom of the third en route to scoring a run in the fourth, five in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth for an 11-2 margin.
USC Aiken did not go down without a fight.
In the ninth, Ryan Metzler led off the frame with a base hit to left. A single by Ben Donath put runners on first and second with nobody out.
With one down, Corey Bryant pinch hit for Dylan Durham and calmly singled, loading the bases.
Kody Belcher’s single through the left side of the infield plated Metzler, making the score 11-3. Tyler Moore’s sacrifice fly allowed Donath to cross home while making it an 11-4 game. Belcher swiped second, getting into scoring position. However, USC Aiken was unable to plate any more runs in the game.
For the game, the Pacers totaled nine hits, including a pair by Metzler. However, eight of the nine hits were for singles with the only extra-base hit coming off the bat of Barkell.
Nick Yobbi took the loss for USC Aiken. He went 4.1 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits. Yobbi struck out seven.
The Pacers look to get back on track this week when they host Paine Wednesday evening in a non-conference tilt. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
