Martinez, Ga--Four years ago Steve Hibbitts left North Augusta to take over the Westside football program. It was a struggle at every turn. The last couple, the Patriots had started making progress and were a playoff team. Now Hibbitts has changed address again.
Tuesday, he was officially introduced as the new Lakeside head coach. A big step in up going from the class 2A Patriots to the 5A Panthers. The talent pool is bigger and the current kids on the roster has him licking his chops to get going.
"There's a lot of things they do great here at Lakeside " siad Steve Hibbitts "Coming in and just overhauling everything, that's not my job here. My job here is to get them over the hump and get them to where they need to be, get them further in the playoffs then where they'e been and that's not an overhaul, that's just a tweaking I would say."
Of course when you have one of the top defensive backs in the country in Rashad Roundtree and plenty of other talent around him, you can see why there's lots of optimism. Hibbitts has a three year Panther vision and that includes winning a state title sooner rather then later.
