AUGUSTA, Ga. - Despite sophomore guard Devonte Thomas tying a career-high in scoring with 27, the Augusta State Jaguars suffered a 70-73 home loss to the Flagler Saints on Thursday, Jan. 17 in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The loss dropped ASU to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the PBC, while the victory moved Flagler to 7-7 on the season and 3-4 in the conference.
The Jags were led by Thomas’ game-high 27 points, including five buckets from behind the arc. Devon Wright-Nelson contributed 12 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. D’Angelo Boyce handed out a game-high eight assists, while Ryan Weems nabbed four steals.
The Saints had four players in double figures. Guard Matt Clark notched 20 and forward Ante Gospic scored 19 and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
The Jaguars maintained a lead through most of the first half, going up by 26-15, with 4:28. ASU ended the half with an eight point lead, 30-22.
The Jags kept the lead through most of the second half off a layup by Thomas giving ASU a nine point advantage with 10:57 on the clock, but the Saints claimed the lead, 54-52, with 6:23 left in the game. Free throws by senior Travis Keels knotted the contest again. ASU pulled away by five on a steal and layup by Ryan Weems.
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Three Lady Jaguars scored in double figures to lead Augusta State to a second straight home victory, 54-48, over conference foe Flagler on Thursday, Jan. 17 in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The win moved the Lady Jags to 10-2 overall, while the defeat dropped the Saints to 2-5 in conference play and 4-8 overall.
“I knew tonight was going to be a grind,” head coach Nate Teymer said. “You have to play through missed baskets and we’re fortunate enough to come out with a victory in this one. Flagler is a very improved team.”
One-on-one with the opposing point guard, senior Brittany White stole the ball and drove the floor for an uncontested layup to tie the game 39-39. Senior Taylor Ayers gave ASU the lead on a jumper from the right side as she cruised her way to her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. White added eight points and three steals.
Winning the opening tipoff and earning the first ASU points of the night, senior Laci Schreiber posted her season-high with 11 points, adding five rebounds. Junior Tiffany Jaecks also added 11 points to match her season-high, while White handed out a game-high seven assists.
Flagler junior guard Shorty Spencer led all scorers with 22 points while forward Shelbi Lindsey notched 12 points. Sophomore center Treva Mason grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the Saints.
