AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Augusta has some new state champs from the sport of gymnastics. The state title is an accomplishment in itself. How these young gymnasts did it, is even more impressive.

"One of the toughest ways to win any state meet is with a very small team because everyone's got to hit," said Dennis Hayden. "Everyone's got to step up to the plate. They've got to get that strike, and they did that."

Four Evans gymnasts accomplished something almost unthinkable. Even for the team, it's tough to put into words.

"Exciting, really nervous" Taylor Dizon said.

Hayden's Gym is known for churning out top level athletes. Their newest batch of state champions have talent and support. What they don't have are the numbers.

"They're sisters. When they go out there. They're supporting one another. They're carrying each other through the meet. I think that's what helps them," Candice Kobert said.

At this year's level seven state meet, these four Augusta gymnasts picked on the big kids from Atlanta, beating teams with twice, or three times as many gymnasts. The end result, out of 42 teams, these are your Georgia state champs.

"We kept supporting each other and we never let one person fall down, we always picked her up." said Reagan Joiner

Falling down wasn't an option. Three of the gymnasts won the all-around for their age group. The fourth, finished second behind her teammate.

"It doesn't matter how many they have, it's how good they are," Montana Mosher said.

"I think sometimes it's a little intimidating but inside we know we can really beat them and we've done it before. I think it gives us that little bit of extra confidence," Kaylen Gay said.

An even bigger challenge awaits at regionals, but nothing seems too big for these four.

Funny thing is, the team did their routines early in the event and were actually coming home when they found out they had won, seeing they fully expected another team would over take them. Now it's off to regionals to battle the best in the southeast.
