March 1, 2014 AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta made the most of home-course advantage, placing six golfers in the top ten for a seven-stroke victory in the Forest Hills Collegiate on Saturday, March 1 at Forest Hills Golf Club.
Meechai Padung enjoyed a strong day on the course, firing rounds of 74, 69 = 143 in the 36-hole event to finish 1-under for the tournament, and four strokes clear of teammate Viktor Edin for medalist honors while competing as an individual. Trailing teammate Jack Heasman after round one for the lead, Padung birdied the first, fifth, and sixth holes to rocket up the leaderboard. Two bogeys on seven and 10 threatened the lead, but he rattled off five consecutive pars before rattling off a birdie-birdie-par finish for his first collegiate victory.
Edin’s second-place finish paced the Jags in the team scores, as he notched an eagle in round one and fired six birdies in a 3-under 69 to share low round honors with Padung and Youngstown State’s Bryan Yeo. Jake Marriott improved by five shots in his second round to vault into a tie for fourth, joining teammate Maverick Antcliff after a steady 75-74 outing.
Alex Wennstam and Heasman each finished in a four-way tie for 10th, eight shots back.
USC Upstate’s Adam Goins carded identical 74s in both rounds to finish third overall, and pace his squads second-place finish.
The Jaguars head to the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Collegiate hosted by USC Aiken on March 10-12 before heading to the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C.
