March 1, 2014 Augusta, Ga. – The Jaguars pulled away in the final minute from a pesky Flagler squad who hung around the whole game to secure a crucial 88-77 Peach Belt Conference victory on senior night. To match the occasion, seniors KJ Sherrill, Ryan Weems, and Harold Doby combined to score 55 points in the their last outing at Christenberry Fieldhouse Saturday night.
The Jags (22-6, 15-4 PBC) jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first three minutes of play, featuring points from KJ Sherrill and Weems. Flagler followed GRU’s early pounce with a 13-4 run of their own, subsequently breaking down the Jags promising start. GRU clang to a 39-34 half-time lead with Sherrill and Weems anchoring the Jags scoring efforts with 11 and nine points, respectfully.
The second-half was a plethora of missed shots and turnovers from both sides in the early action until Flagler and leading scorer Jerrell Oxendine pulled a head of the Jags for the first time 46-45.
The teams continued to trade baskets for more than 10 minutes before KJ Sherrill, assisted by brother Keshun, made a critical jumper at the 1:51 mark to place the Jaguars on top for good at 76-75. Ryan Weems left the home-crowd with two farewell steals to help close the game out and give the Jags their last win of the regular season.
KJ Sherrill led all scorers with 21 points, while senior teammates Weems and Doby each added 17 points and eight rebounds. Devon Wright-Nelson notched 11 and Keshun 10. GRU opens play at the Peach Belt Conference tournament Friday, March 6 in Columbus Ga., hosted by Columbus State University.
