AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars swept a non-conference doubleheader at Lake Olmstead Stadium Sunday afternoon as they beat the Lindenwood Lions 6-2 and 8-3.
Senior JD Sabo started the game for GRU Augusta (7-11) with a left-field line single and consecutive doubles from senior Jeff Rice and sophomore Hunter Boose put the Jaguars up 2-0 in the first. Lindenwood left-handed starter Zac Pearman gave up two more runs in the third, when a bases-loaded error from his defense scored one and a sacrifice fly to left center scored the other for a 4-0 Jaguar lead.
Ryan Light ripped a single up the middle that scored one for the Lions’ first run of the game, but in the bottom of the fourth the Jags poured on two more after Boose’s second double of game and a Connor Gilbert single. Up 6-1, senior starter Clint Echols picked off his third runner of the game to escape an inning and keep his team on top.
Echols tossed eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings and allowed five hits for one run before he was relieved by Will Robertson in the seventh. Echols (2-0) got the win, while freshman Tristan Jones earned the save in 1.1 innings. Sabo and Boose each had three hits, while Connor Gilbert had two and Rice and Loyd one each.
In game two, the Jags took their second, first-inning lead of the day off Rice’s sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sabo. Left-handed sophomore Frank Warren got the game two start as the Lions’ offense went three-up, three-down in the first two innings. The Jags gave Warren a 3-0 lead into the fourth, but a Ryan Light solo homerun put the Lions on the board.
The Jaguars plated two more in the fifth when Sabo hit a double to score Reydel Gonzalez from first and Chase Loyd singled off the Lindenwood pitcher for a 5-1 GRU lead. Warren gave up his second solo homer of the game, this one to Nick Kolley for a 5-2 game. The Jaguars totaled nine hits and used four Lindenwood errors to build an 8-3 final as Jamie Suggs closed out the ninth for the Jags.
Warren (2-1) got the win, while Rice went 3-for-3 in game two with four RBI and Sabo was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. The Jags host Paine College this Tuesday, March 4 for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference first pitch.
