April 27, 2014 PEMBROKE, N.C. - GRU Augusta couldn’t complete the Peach Belt Conference series sweep, falling 15-4 in the game-three loss to No. 23 UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon at Cox Field after the Jaguars outscored the Braves 23-to-14 in the first two meetings.
The Jaguars (19-31, 11-19 PBC) played their 50th game of the year and their final of the regular season in the set back to UNCP. Taking 2-of-3 from the Braves (33-17, 17-13 PBC) this weekend, the Jags will await the Francis Marion and Young Harris series next weekend to determine their hopes of reaching the Peach Belt Conference tournament.
GRU Augusta compiled four hits and scored three times to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Leadoff man JD Sabo started game three with an infield single and Jeff Rice produced the first RBI with an opposite-field shot to right. Connor Gilbert followed with a triple to right field for a 3-0 lead, but the momentum diminished as UNCP put up four runs on Jaguar lefty Frank Warren in the bottom half of the opening inning. Warren (4-7) surrendered eight hits total for six earned runs in 2.0 innings before Tristan Jones tossed three and gave up six hits for five runs.
The Braves scattered 18 hits to GRU’s 11 and capitalized on three errors from the Jaguar defense to take an eventual 15-4 final off six Jaguar pitchers. Gilbert hit a two-out solo homer in the eighth to interrupt the bleeding, but the Black & Gold scored twice more in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final.
Andy Sullivan (7-1) struck out three over seven strong innings for UNCP, scattering 10 hits for three earned runs. Sabo went 2-for-5 in his final regular season game as a Jaguar, while Rice and Gilbert were each 2-for-4 with Gilbert accounting for three RBI. UNCP has secured the No. 5 seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament which will take place May 10-11 in Aiken, S.C.
