July 2, 2014 AUGUSTA, GA-- Accuracy and speed. Competitive pistol shooting combines the two elements into one individual challenge.

At Augusta's Pinetucky Gun range, the matches have an extra element of competition-- father and son.

"We used to race dirtbikes, but I got to old and broke up to do that so now we do something safer," competitive shooter Mike Nyland said.

Nyland has been shooting pistols for years. His teenage son, Thomas Nyland, holstered up only a few years ago.

"It was a lot of fun, it was challenging, but it's only as challenging as you make it," Thomas said.

For the younger Nyland, that message is dead-to-rights, accurately on target. The challenge has become less of one as the student has become the teacher.

"He comes to me asking for advice," Thomas said with a smile.

"I used to be able to give him advice. He's better than me now," Mike said.

And there's no better moment for the Nyland family. Dad brings son to the range. Son becomes one of the best junior shooters in the country.

Currently, Thomas is ranked eighth in the USA's B level which, according to him, still isn't good enough.

"You unload the gun, you holster back up and you stop and you think about it and you say "wow, that was really bad". What you do right, you learn from that and you do it over and over again until you get it perfectly right," Thomas said.

The community of shooters is strong. This CSRA club is even stronger. Father and son with a hobby and a connection. All while pushing each other to aim higher.

"Something that people throw out there is practice makes perfect, but that's not correct. Perfect practice makes perfect," Thomas Nyland added.
