RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Augusta State turned in its lowest round of the Puerto Rico Classic Tuesday in the third and final round at Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course.
The Jaguars got a pair of sub-par rounds from Robin Petersson and Alex Wennstam and posted a 290 (+2) to finish in 10th place. The tournament, which was hosted by Purdue and featured eight teams ranked in the top 50, marked the opener of ASU’s 2013 spring schedule.
Freshman Maverick Antcliff, making his collegiate debut in the event, shot an even-par 72 and paced the Jags with a tie for 16th at 214 (-2). Petersson tied for 39th at 221 (+5), while Wennstam and senior Derek Chang tied for 47th at 223 (+7). Cody Shafer was 72nd at 234 (+18).
Sixth-ranked Alabama rolled to a seven-stroke victory over runnerup Oklahoma. SMU was third, followed by Georgia and Georgia Tech. North Carolina State All-American Albin Choi fired a 7-under 65 and captured medalist honors by two shots over three players with a winning total of 204 (-12).
The three-day, 54-hole event featured a 15-team field that included ASU, Alabama, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State, SMU and Virginia Tech.
