Lynx Look To Sign Eight Players

AUGUSTA, Ga.— The Augusta Lynx have extended qualifying offers to eight players, head coach and director of hockey operations Bob Ferguson announced today.

Right wing Matt Auffrey, left wing Anthony Battaglia, defenseman Chris Brooks, left wing Travis Fuller, forward John Laliberte, defenseman Ken Scuderi, center Aaron Slattengren and forward Chase Watson all received qualifying offers from Ferguson.

Each team was entitled to reserve rights to a maximum of eight qualified players. Of these eight qualified players, no more than four of the qualified players shall be “veterans” (260 regular season professional hockey games played as of the start of the upcoming 2008-09 season).

Auffrey, 22, had 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) and 92 penalty minutes in 72 games with the Lynx during his rookie season last year. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound native of Cincinnati, Ohio had 107 points (51 goals, 56 assists) and 202 penalty minutes in 124 regular-season games with Kitchener, Brampton and Kingston of the Ontario Hockey League from 2005-06 through 2006-07. Auffrey was originally drafted 172nd overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Battaglia, 28, had 10 points (two goals, eight assists) and six penalty minutes in 16 regular-season games with the Lynx and five points (three goals, two assists) in five Kelly Cup Playoff games after coming to Augusta in a mid-season trade with the Columbia Inferno last season. The 6-foot, 190-pound native of Chicago has 239 points (98 goals, 141 assists) and 210 penalty minutes in 369 career regular-season ECHL games with Florida, Mississippi, Utah, Columbia and Augusta from 2002-03 through 2007-08. He also has 13 points (six goals, seven assists) and eight penalty minutes in 16 career Kelly Cup Playoff games during that same span.

Brooks, 26, split the 2007-08 season between the Lynx and the Wheeling Nailers, totaling seven points (one goal, six assists) and 86 penalty minutes in 69 regular-season games. Brooks also had one assist and four penalty minutes in five Kelly Cup Playoff games last season. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound native of New York City has 10 points (one goal, nine assists) and 133 penalty minutes in 118 career regular-season ECHL games with Wheeling and Augusta from 2006-07 through 2007-08.

Fuller, 22, split his 2007-08 rookie season between the Lynx and the Cincinnati Cyclones, totaling 36 points (20 goals, 16 assists) and 47 penalty minutes in 59 regular-season games. Fuller also had three points (two goals, one assist) and five penalty minutes in five Kelly Cup Playoff games last season. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Whitney, Ont., had 165 points (66 goals, 99 assists) and 114 penalty minutes in 236 career regular-season games with Barrie and Mississauga of the OHL.

Laliberte, 24, had 28 points (15 goals, 13 assists) and 37 penalty minutes in 29 games with the Lynx last season, while also collecting 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) and 25 penalty minutes in 43 regular-season games with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Saco, Maine, has 55 points (29 goals, 26 assists) and 63 penalty minutes in 59 career regular-season ECHL games with Trenton and Augusta from 2006-07 through 2007-08. He also has 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) and 31 penalty minutes in 79 career regular-season AHL games with Worcester and Milwaukee during the same span. Laliberte was originally drafted 114th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the fourth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Scuderi, 27, had 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) and 28 penalty minutes in 53 regular-season games with the Lynx last season. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound native of Bethpage, N.Y., has 60 points (11 goals, 49 assists) in 183 career regular-season ECHL games, all with the Lynx.

Slattengren, 27, had 44 points (28 goals, 16 assists) and 30 penalty minutes in 33 regular-season games with the Lynx last season, as well as three points (one goal, two assists) and six penalty minutes in five Kelly Cup Playoff games. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Duluth, Minn., split the 2007-08 season between Augusta and the AHL, where he tallied 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) and 26 penalty minutes in 37 games with Manitoba and Providence. Slattengren has 88 points (49 goals, 39 assists) and 54 penalty minutes in 91 career regular-season ECHL games while tallying three points (two goals, one assist) and 17 penalty minutes in 11 career Kelly Cup Playoff games with Idaho, Phoenix and Augusta from 2005-06 through 2007-08.

Watson, 25, had 30 points (14 goals, 16 assists) and 46 penalty minutes in 71 regular-season games while notching one goal in five Kelly Cup Playoff games with the Lynx last season. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot, 195-pound native of Media, Pa., had 77 points (19 goals, 58 assists) and 80 penalty minutes while attending Providence College.
