Local Products Ready For College Football Season

Monday June 30, 2008
We're just about a month away from the start of football practice both on the high school and college front. I know, it's getting here quickly! Of course this could be the year of the Bulldog in Athens. One guy who could play a large roll, north augusta product C.J. Byrd.

The senior strong safety, Byrd will add senior leadership to one of the best "D's" in the nation, at least that's what they're hoping for. Byrd came up with his first career interception a year ago and started all 13 games. While not wanting to admit there's a little more pressure with lofty expectations, he knows it's there.

" I guess you could say a little more pressure" said CJ Byrd "You're always going to be nervous when you go out there, a few butterflies but I think I've gotten use to it and I know it's something I'm just going to have to deal with it. Very anxious, I can't wait til the season starts. But not really thinking about the National Championship, just try take it one game at a time."

Byrd is finishing up some summer classes, then before you know it, they'll be hitting the practice field for real.

While C.J's a senior, Strom Thurmond product Aramis Hillary will be a true freshemen as he heads up the road to Columbia to join Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks. After talking with a bunch of other schools, USC was a late comer in the recruiting battle, but it was Spurrier himself who called Aramis and offered him a spot. Hillary says his a little nervous about leaving home but will just give it his all once he gets there.

"There's no expectations. I know a lot of people have expectations for me but I don't really have expectations for myself besides do my best" said Aramis Hillary "If my best isn't what they want then I'll just wait it out and see what happens after that."
