McIlroy still on top at -10

AUGUSTA---It's getting very interesting at the top of the leaderboard.

Some of the young guns are staying there. Yesterday's leader, Rory McIlroy, is rock solid, and at one point had it to -10 on the front nine.

Some of the older players are putting their names toward the top as well. One guy who falls into that category is Fred Couples. At 51, Couples went out and fired a 68 today, and with not a lot of scores in the 60s, that was very good.

We talked to some of the other guys near the top.

"Retiring is what it would be," said Geoff Ogilvy, when asked what it would mean if he were to win the Masters. "I would be gone. You know, it would be the biggest upset in golf history." Ogilvy shot -3 today for -6 overall.

"I played pretty similar both days," said Fred Couples, who was -4 today for -5 overall. "I probably gave myself a few more makeable putts today."

"The difference from yesterday and today are pretty simple," said Ricky Barnes. "Par 5 scoring." Barnes shot -1 today for -5 overall.

Defending champ Phil Mickelson has maintained the status quo. He was out early working with his coach, Butch Harmon, but it doesn't seem like it worked. He started at -2 and finished at -2, but had four bogeys and four birdies to get to that number. He's not out of it by a long stretch, but Mickelson is still trying to get the most out of his game.

"I just need to get some putts to go," he said. "You know, when I get aggressive on 16--I hit a shot in there eight feet--I need to capitalize on that, I've got to get the putt to go to keep the momentum going. Today I just wasn't able to do that."

How about Tiger Woods? Well, early in his round he too was looking for those hard-to-come-by birdies. He's been hovering around the cut line for a good portion of the day. 18 is playing as the third hardest hole out there, so there aren't a lot of birdie chances. Still, he should be around for the weekend, barring something totally out of the ordinary.
