AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Masters Golf Tournament is less than two weeks away, and as groundskeepers tend to the greens on the course, some area homeowners are taking special care of their own lawns as well.

The Smiths are working toward sheer perfection. Every blade of grass is in place, and every new leaf turned. They are in spring cleaning mode in preparation for the Masters.

"We rented our home a number of times," said Toxey Smith, a Columbia County homeowner.

Smith and his wife speak from experience when they talk about putting up a home for rent. Smith is a home builder, and his wife is in the business of showing and selling homes.

"Curb appeal is the first to get someone in the house," Smith said.

The first impression really does matter: from how green your lawn looks to the flowers that are in bloom.

Dustin VanHouse, with Bulldawgs Total Lawn Care said, "Some people will call us a month in advance and some people wait until the last minute just like with everything else."

VanHouse has seen business grow every year during the Masters for the past 14 years.

"What makes it so unique is we have the azaleas," he said. "We're the Garden City and everyone wants their place to look fantastic."

Cleaning, fertilizing and all that landscaping can rake in some big bucks.

"We've run across jobs that run up and beyond the six-figure mark," VanHouse said.

He says on average, though, a job can cost a couple hundred dollars, and when every detail matters, homeowners can have some over-the-top requests.

"There was a customer that requested one time that the hedges get trimmed and that you go to each individual leaf and cut in half and twist the leaf off on each," he added.
