Artist finds new use for old golf clubs

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- From coffee tables, to lamps, and everything in between, Jeff Diamond has found a new use for old golf clubs.

"I make spheres out of the old persimmon drivers, which most people know they don't even make anymore," artist Jeff Diamond said.

He started out as a street vendor on Washington Road nine years ago, but now every Masters week he calls the Magnolia Club home.

"I was exhibiting my items outside of Carrabbas on Washington Road, and that's when the owner of this club found me, discovered me, I guess, and brought me into the club. I can sell upwards of nine to ten-thousand dollars," Diamond said.

This year he's hoping for more, and he thinks he'll get it with his biggest sculpture yet.

"This is one giant golf ball. I started building this last year after The Masters," he said.

Weighing in over 1,500 pounds, his masterpiece is made up of 3,000 white golf clubs welded together to make the shape of a giant golf ball.

"I'm one of the only non-golfers that have handled hundreds of thousands of golf clubs. I don't golf," Diamond said.

While Diamond might not golf, one of his pieces now sits in the home of someone who definitely does and is no stranger to The Masters.

"I'm happy to say this past Christmas one of my items was bought and given to Jack Nicklaus. They bought one of my turtles made out of metal wood drivers and a verdigris finish put on it," he said.

Nicklaus is a six-time Masters champion, the most in the tournament's history.

"He wrote me a nice little note. It said Jeff, best wishes. Thank you, Jack Nicklaus," Diamond recalled.

Now Diamond is hoping his artwork will be a hole-in-one with the guests coming into town.

His art is featured at the Magnolia Club all week long, but if you don't want to battle Washington Road, you can also find some of his pieces at the Aiken Center for the Arts.
