Masters patrons decide whether convenience is worth parking prices

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Thousands of cars. Plenty of spaces. An uphill climb to decide whether to pay or not to pay.

Tom Barnum decided the $10 was worth the convenience of a short walk.

"For what we have to pay for tickets, the parking stuff is insignificant really," he said.

He'd rather watch the professionals drive on the course than drive on the roads himself.

"As slow as the traffic is moving, I might as well walk in the sunshine instead of driving and getting any closer," adds Barnum. "But I think that it's about 3-400 yards."

Others did weave around Washington Road looking for open lots. That's especially true with workers saying good spaces in the free lots were going quick.

They could have found Kyla Tyler's home. She's on spring break.

"I had it at 10 (dollars) this morning, but then people were saying I should drop it to five (dollars), because of the other guy over there (had it at five dollars), so they probably would just go to his house," said Tyler.

This week used to be a moneymaker for Dad before the pedestrian gate was moved to Berckmans Road.

"He used to charge 20 dollars, and he used to get a lot of money every year since the gate was really close, but now since they moved it, it's kind of slow," Tyler adds.

Those who don't want to deal with the parking problem this week are leasing out their lots and letting others run them. Whole Life Ministries is doing it. The church won't say exactly how much it's making from parking this week.

The church says some people who are parking make donations. But who gets the money? That's confidential, some parking attendants say.

Whole Life is just honoring a long term lease agreement that was in place before they ever bought the plaza.
