Masters patrons welcome Tiger back to golf

News 12 at 6 o'clock, April 5, 2010

AUGUSTA---With a simple practice round, Tiger's long break from golf is over. People who were lucky enough to have a Monday badge had a front row seat to history.

It's Masters Week in Augusta, Tiger Woods is chasing his fifth green jacket, and from how things looked on the 18th green today, the fans are ready to change the subject back to the game of golf.

People were watching very closely to see how Tiger Woods would play 18 of the most famous holes in the game. And today's Tiger had more smiles than we've seen on him in quite some time, thanks to the patrons.

Huge galleries followed Tiger today, anxious to see what kind of game he'd bring to Augusta.

"The crowd has been awesome," said Jason Pollock of Irmo, SC. "People have yelled out 'Welcome back, Tiger', 'Way to go, Tiger', 'Good luck this week'."

Tiger hasn't played golf to warm up anywhere else. This is his first time playing on a course in months. And this is Augusta National, a challenge even if you are the top-ranked golfer in the world.

"I frankly don't know how he's going to do it," said Jim Huber with Masters TV. "But then he does an awful lot of things we don't know how he does. Maybe that's not the right way to put it."

There were lots of reporters on the course today, all working the same story. One crowd was busy trying to interview Jim Furyk, who played a few holes with Tiger today.

Bobby Jones himself had something to say about the treatment of golfers at his course:

"Most distressing to those who love the game of golf is the applauding or cheering of misplays or misfortunes of a player. Such occurrences have been rare at the Masters, but we must eliminate them entirely if our patrons are to continue to merit their reputation as the most knowledgeable and considerate in the world."
