Augusta, GA--With no Vaughn Taylor or Charles Howell III in the field, our area connection this year falls in the hands of Oliver Wilson and Brian Gay. Gay, a tour veteran that's finally broken through and gets his shot at the masters.
It's just 46 miles from Louisville to Augusta. For Brian Gay, it's more like forever. A PGA journeyman who spent 10 plus years without a win, none the less thinking about The Masters. But it won't be his first visit to the hollowed grounds.
"I first went when I was like nine and that was awesome." said Brian Gay "Then went in high school a few times and in college and once or twice since then."
While Louisville can claim Gay, he actually doesn't have a lot of memories of the place. You can't blame him seeing he was just 10 when he left. He didn't even play much golf back then either.
"I was just starting to hit it around a bit b ut didn't really get into it until I had moved to Alabama."
Now Brian Gay is a two time winner on tour. His first win came 51 weeks ago at Harbor Town where he won The Hertiage by a staggering 10 shots. For the most part, he was just thinking about the finish, not about The Masters
"I was pretty focused out there, trying to hang on to that lead and get it done. Definitely after, especially with family and friends that were there from the area and it was pretty exciting. Definitely thought a lot about it after the tournament" added Gay
Since Harbor Town, Gay has won again, this time at the St Jude's Classic. With the wins come noteriet, something he's not use to.
"It was a great year and of course a lot more people recognize me and I get to talk to people like you more. A few more demands on my time."
He also gained a little more noterieity by appearing on a special edition of Sports Illustrated. It was dumb luck it coincided with his victory at Harbor Town.
"Ironically that story was in the works for a while and they were finishing up. We did that photo shoot Thursday of Hilton Head and the story obviously got better with the ten shot win there so that was cool."
That win, and 51 weeks ago has Gay watching time fly, instead of crawling along.
"In a blink of an eye, I can't believe its almost April so time goes fast."
